1970 Cadillac Fleetwood

Fleetwood Sixty-Special: The Fleetwood models had all equipment offered in DeVille’s plus Automatic Level Control. The Brougham also came standard with adjustable reading lights; Dual Comfort front seat with Two-Way power adjustment (left side) and a padded vinyl top. Distinguishing Sixty-Specials externally were bright metal wheel house moldings; wide full-length rocker panels with rear extensions and block lettering, denoting the series, positioned in back of the front wheel opening. At the end of the 1970 model run, the "standard" Sixty-Special sedan was dropped. A noticeable trim change was the use of a thin, horizontal belt line molding on all 1970 Sixty-Specials.

Fleetwood Seventy-five: Special equipment found on the big Cadillac sedan and limousine included Automatic Level Control; rear window defogger; four rear ash trays; and a manual righthand outside rear view mirror. Separate Climate Control systems were provided for front and rear compartments. Fleetwood wreath crests appeared at the extreme edge of the rear fenders, above the belt molding, on both models. As usual, the doors on the limousine were cut into the roof and a fixed driver's partition with adjustable glass compartment divider was inside. The front compartment was trimmed in genuine leather, the rear in one of five combinations. Three of these were the more standard Divan cloth trims, while Decordo cloth or Dumbarton cloth with leather were the richest selections available

1970 Cadillac Eldorado

1970 CadillacThe Eldorado (actually Fleetwood Eldorado) for 1970 carried over the 1968 and 1969 body design with an improvement in the engine displacement. The 472 cubic inch engine was bored out to a colossal 500 cubic inches. This was (and still is) the largest passenger-car engine ever built for production. It had 400 horsepower and 550 lbs/ft of torque. The grille included a plaque labeled "8.2 LITRE" to indicate the size of the engine. It was located on the left side of the redesigned grill. The grille itself had a cross-hatched insert, but horizontal blades were set upon it, emphasizing the V-shape of the front. Thinner vertical tail-lamps were used, giving a more rakish look. The winged-V emblems used at the front of the fenders on other Cadillac’s were added to the Eldorado front parking lamp lenses. Bright rocker panel trim, with front and rear extensions was used. There was also Eldorado block lettering at the lower front fender behind the wheel housing. A new electric sliding sunroof option was also available. Also the Trackmaster skid control system was made available later in the model year.

1970 Cadillac DeVille

DEVILLE

DeVille’s had all of the same features as Calais models, plus dual rear cigarette lighters, Two-Way horizontal control front seat adjusters and rear center arm rest in all models except convertibles. Exterior distinction came from a DeVille script above the rear end of the belt molding and from the use of long, rectangular backup light lenses set into the lower rear bumper, as opposed to the smaller, square lenses used on Calais. A new feature seen this year was a body color border around the edges of the vinyl top covering, when this option was ordered. This treatment had first been seen on 1969 Fleetwood’s. The Sedan DeVille and Convertible DeVille were in their last season.

1970 Cadillac Calais

A relatively minor restyling marked the 1970 Cadillac Calais. A facelift included a grille with 13 vertical blades set against a delicately cross-hatched rectangular opening. The bright metal headlamp surrounds were bordered with body color to give a more refined look. Narrow, vertical "vee" taillights were seen again, but no longer had smaller V-shaped bottom lenses pointing downward below the bumper. Wheel discs and winged crest fender tip emblems were new. A Calais signature script was placed above the rear end of the horizontal lower belt molding, just ahead of the chromed taillight dividers. Standard equipment included Turbo Hydramatic transmission; power steering; front disc brakes; power windows; center front arm rest; electric clock; two front cigarette lighters; twin front and rear ash trays; complete interior and exterior courtesy lamps; safety, warning, and convenience lights; outside remote control lefthand mirror; visor vanity mirror; and L78-15 bias fiberglass blackwall tires.

1970 Cadillac Overview

A total of 238,745 Cadillacs, built for the 1970 model run, set an all-time divisional record. Calendar year sales totals were off the mark, however, due to a major G.M. strike. They peaked at just 152,859 units. George R. Elges became general manager of Cadillac Division this year. Sales of the new Cadillac line began September 18, 1969. The optional Trackmaster skid control system was made available for the Eldorado, subsequent to initial model introduction.

For 1970, there were five models: Calais (two-door hardtop coupe and four-door hardtop sedan), DeVille (two-door coupe, two-door convertible, four-door sedan, and four-door hardtop sedan), Fleetwood Sixty-Special (four-door sedan and four-door brougham), Fleetwood Seventy-five (four-door sedan, four-door limousine, and commercial chassis used in hearses and ambulances, etc.), and Fleetwood Eldorado (two-door hardtop coupe)
