1937 Cadillac Model 37-60 - 37-75

Once again Cadillac fielded six models: The series 37-60, 37-65, 37-70, 37-75 were all eight cylinder cars. The 37-85 was the same as the 37-75 except now it had twelve cylinders. The series 80 of 1936 was dropped this year. Also the 37-90 (with 16 cylinders) was essentially the same as the 36-90 of 1936. In fact, this was the last year for this overhead valve V-16 engine and body with its 154 in. wheelbase. Next year, the sixteen cylinder power plant would be an L-head shoehorned into the series 75 on a 141 in. wheelbase.

The Series 60 (new last year) added a new Convertible Sedan body style. Throughout the line there were a few body changes including:

  • Eggcrate grill and hood louvers;
  • Higher fenders with lengthwise crease along the top;
  • Set of three horizontal bars each side of grill;
  • Bumpers carrying the Cadillac emblem;
  • Swinging rear quarter windows;
  • All steel body construction.

1937 Cadillac

Series 60 shared many features with the LaSalle, but used the 346 cu. in. V-8 engine. A Series 60 Commercial Chassis with 1603/8 in. wheelbase was offered.

The new Series 37-65 was offered in only one body style - a five passenger Touring Sedan built by Fisher on the 131 in. wheelbase used on Series 70 cars. This car offered a longer, heavier car than the Series 60 at a price below that of the Fleetwood bodies cars.

The Series 37-70 and 37-75 bodies same as 1936 except for:
  • Drip molding running from the bottom of the front pillar up and over the doors and rear quarter window;
  • New fenders and bumpers;
  • Headlights rigidly attached (adjusted by moving reflector);
  • Wheel discs incorporated a hub cap;
  • Built-in trunk used on most bodies.

A diecast eggcrate grill was used, but the hood louver treatment differed from that used on Fisher bodied cars. Chrome diecast strips were used at the rear of the hood side panels. A seven passenger Fisher bodied Special Touring Sedan, with or without division, was offered on the 138 in. wheelbase.

These two body styles had the eggcrate hood louvers typical of all Fisher bodied Cadillacs for 1937. The Business Car line included eight passenger versions of these Special Sedans plus eight passenger versions of four Fleetwood body styles. The eighth passenger was seated with two others on the auxiliary seats. A Commercial Chassis on a 156 in. wheelbase was offered. Engine changes included:

  • Lighter flywheel;
  • Generator relocated in the Vee;
  • Oil filter installed;
  • New carburetor with full-automatic electric choke:
  • Oil bath air cleaner;
  • Relocated distributor.

A new transmission design featured:
  • Pin-type synchronizers;
  • Shifter rails relocated to side of case;
  • Cover on bottom of case;
  • Extension integral with transmission main shaft.

In 1936 six models were available:

1.      Model 36-60 (straight eight engine)

2.      Model 36-70 (V-8 engine)

3.      Model 36-75 (V-8 engine)

4.      Model 36-80 (V-12 engine)

5.      Model 36-85 (V-12 engine)

6.      Model 36-90 (V-16 engine)

Model 36-90

The 1936 Cadillac V-16 (Series 36-90) was a continuation of the 1935 cars. Built to order only, nearly half of the fifty-two units were seven passenger limousines. As with V-8 and V-12 lines, Fleetwood bodies for the V-16 now used the all steel Turret Top. All body styles had Vee windshields. A minor mechanical change involved the use of the "Peak-load" generator.

6.      Model 36-90 (V-16 engine)

Model 36-80 & 85

  • The 1936 V-12 Cadillac (series 36-80 and 36-85) was essentially a 1936 V-8 with a twelve cylinder engine.
  • Performance was greatly improved over previous V-12's.
  • Identification with the hood closed was possible only by reading emblems.
  • Even dual exhaust pipes would no longer identify the V-12.
  • A crossover pipe from left to right manifold resulted in a single exhaust system (with two mufflers in series).
  • Commercial Cars and Chassis also shared the V-8 and the V-12 engines.

Model 36-70 & 36-75

  • Though not the best seller in 1936, the Series 36-70 and 36-75 were the basic Cadillac’s.
  • Lower priced LaSalle’s and Series 60's were better sellers; V-12's and V-16's were better cars; but the 346 cu. in. V-8's were the ones which survived to form the main source of Cadillac business for years to come.
  • The bodies were all Vee windshield styles by Fleetwood. 1936 Cadillac
  • A narrower radiator shell supported the new louver-style "Convex Vee" grill.
  • Headlights were mounted on the radiator shell; parking lights were inside the headlights.
  • Front fenders were new, with a crease along the center line.
  • Cowl vent was changed back to opening forward.
  • Built in trunks on "Touring" styles, Town Sedans, and Convertibles Sedans.
  • Stationary and Convertible Coupes had rumble seats plus a separate door for the spare tire at the extreme rear of the deck.
  • All bodies now used the all steel Turret Top.

 6.      Model 36-90 (V-16 engine)

 Model 30-60

  • The Cadillac series 36-60, a new model for 1936 was more than a LaSalle, but less than a full size Cadillac.
  • It had the same concept as the LaSalle, but with the Cadillac name.
  • It was smaller, shorter, lighter, less powerful, less expensive, but with full Cadillac quality.
  • It was also limited to three body styles, by Fisher. 1936 Cadillac
  • The Convertible Coupe had a rumble seat, but the closed Coupe had only a small folding seat inside for an extra passenger.
  • Both these body styles had a single fenderwell on the side opposite the driver.
  • The Vee windshield, grill and fender treatment were the same as on the larger V-8's.
  • The engine was the same new engine as in the Fleetwood bodies V-8's, but with a 3/8 in. smaller bore.
  • The transmission was the smaller unit, similar to that in the LaSalle.
  • Many dimensions were less than on the larger V-8's, to fit the concept of a lower priced, less pretentious, but equally high-quality product.

1935 Cadillac

Models:

Eight Cylinder 355-D

Twelve Cylinder 370-D

Sixteen Cylinder 452-D

The V-8 Cadillac for 1935 remained virtually unchanged from 1934. The biplane bumpers of 1934 were replaced by more conventional units. One major change was introduced on Fisher bodies -- the all steel Turret Top. Fleetwood bodies did not have the steel top until 1936. For 1934, Fleetwood bodied V-8's on 146 in. wheelbase were designated Series 30. Fisher bodied cars continued under the designations Series 10 and Series 20.

Having been associated with funeral and ambulance equipment for many years, Cadillac embarked on an extra effort in 1935 to consolidate this business. Three Fleetwood bodied seven passenger livery sedans were offered on the V-8 Series 30 chassis. Additionally, a 160 in. wheelbase commercial V-8 chassis was offered for hearse and ambulance adaptation.

Some confusion exists as regards style numbers on 1934-35 Fleetwood bodies. Following the previous Fleetwood system, V-8's would be 56___ or 60___ styles, V-12's would be 57___ or 61___ styles, and V-16's would be 58___ or 62___ styles. This system was followed in promotional literature, in the 1934 Master Parts List, and in early factory records. However, since the bodies were identical for all these series, Fleetwood stamped all body plates 57___ or 60___. Master Parts Lists after 1934 used only 57___ or 60___ style numbers for 1934-35 Fleetwood bodies. Starting in 1936, V-8 and V-12 style numbers reflected the new 1936 series designations, but V16's retained the 57___ system. However the 60___ styles were no longer offered.
