1934 Cadillac

1934 Cadillac’s were completely restyled and mounted on an entirely new chassis, but used the same basic engines as in 1933.

There were 3 different models:

V8 355-D

V12 370-D

V16 452-D

Bodies

  • Bodies on the Series 10 and 20 cars were built by Fisher.
  • Bodies on the V-8 Fleetwood Series were shared with the twelve’s and sixteen’s.
  • Styling emphasized streamlining including concealment of all chassis features except the wheels
  • Body construction was improved for better insulation against engine heat and reduction of engine, road, and wind noise.
  • Bumpers were a stylish but ineffective biplane design, mounted against telescoping springs.
  • The grill was Vee shaped and sloping, set into a painted shell.
  • Although restricted use of chrome was a feature of the overall ornamentation, a chrome plated radiator shell was available as an option.
  • Horns and radiator filler cap were concealed under the hood.
  • Teardrop Guide Multi-beam headlights were mounted on streamlined supports attached to the fenders.
  • Parking lamps were mounted in the headlight supports.
  • Airfoil shaped front fenders were brought low over the chassis.
  • The hood sills were high, with the entire fender shape molded into the radiator shell.
  • A curious horizontal crease broke the nose contour of the fenders.
  • Hoods extending nearly to the windshield carried shutter type louvers in the side panel.
  • Windshields were fixed and steeply sloping; 18 degrees flat on Fisher bodies, 25 degrees flat or 29-1/2 degrees Vee on Fleetwood bodies.
  • Cowl vents opened toward the windshield; one vent on flat windshield bodies, two vents projecting through openings in the hood on Vee windshield bodies.
  • Bodies were two inches lower than on previous models.
  • Added passenger space in the front compartment was achieved by moving the hand brake lever to the left of the driver, under the instrument panel.
  • On twelve’s and sixteen’s, the gearshift lever was moved forward to the clutch housing.
  • Rear fenders were airfoil shaped and carried rear lights which matched the headlights.
  • The gas tank filler on Fisher bodies was on the left side at the rear of the body; on Fleetwood bodies in the left rear fender.
  • All bodies featured a beaver tail rear deck which completely covered the chassis.
  • On Fleetwood bodies, the spare was concealed inside the rear deck, unless optional fender mounts were specified.

Chassis

  • Significant changes in chassis design resulted in improved riding and handling plus decreased driver fatigue.
  • The new independent "knee action" front suspension with coil springs and center point steering resulted in greatly reduced unsprung weight.
  • Front shocks were now an integral part of the suspension; the shock arm being the upper suspension arm.
  • An inverted steering box, mounted on the outside of the frame, was used on Fleetwood bodied cars.
  • Hotchkiss drive replaced the torque tube drive.
  • Rear brakes were operated by pull rods and cables.
  • A new frame of X design added to chassis strength and allowed for the reduction in overall vehicle height.
  • A stabilizer bar to control body roll in turns was added at the rear of the chassis.
  • The brake and clutch pedal assembly was relocated from transmission to frame.
  • Mufflers on Fleetwood bodied cars were relocated to the outside of the frame.
  • In Fisher bodies, the battery was under the front seat, on the right side.
  • In the Fleetwood bodies, the battery was under the right front fender and was removed from underneath.

Engine

  • Engine changes were few, but horsepower was increased.
  • All engines used Lynite Aluminum pistons.
  • Compression ratios were increased.
  • Intake ducting to the carburetor air cleaner was extended to the radiator casing, providing cold, dense air rather than the hot air in the engine compartment.
  • The combination of Aluminum pistons, cold intake air, and higher compression with improved fuels resulted in increased horsepower and engine speeds.
  • Detail changes in the V-8 engine included a change to the Detroit Lubricator Carburetor, use of dual valve springs, discontinuation of the oil filter, and solenoid starter control with starter button on instrument panel.
  • One V-8 engine change to be appreciated by anyone removing a cylinder head was the change from head studs to cap screws.
  • The change was actually made so that the heads could be turned before lifting, so as to clear the hood shelf.
  • Another change, not necessarily appreciated was the elimination of provision for hand cranking.

I. D. DATA

  • Serial numbers were on top surface of frame side bar, right side, of dash.
  • Same as engine number.
  • Starting no.: 3100001.
  • Ending: 3108318 (with 1935).
  • Engine numbers were stamped on crankcase near the water inlet on the side.
  • Starting engine no.; 3100001.
  • Ending: 3108318 (with 1935).

Some confusion exists regarding style numbers on 1934-35 Fleetwood bodies. Following the previous Fleetwood system, V-8's would be 56___ or 60___ styles would be 57___ or 61___ styles, and V-16's would be 58___ or 60____ styles. This system was followed in promotional literature, in the 1934 Master Parts List, and in early factory records. However, since the bodies were identical for all these series, Fleetwood stamped all body plates 57___ or 60___. Master Parts Lists after 1934 used only 57____ and 60____ style numbers for 1934-35 Fleetwood bodies. Starting in 1936, V-8 and V-12 style numbers reflected the new 1936 series designations, but V16's retained the 57___ system. However, 60___ styles were no longer offered.

Sixteen Cylinder - 452 D

The V-16's shared the Fleetwood bodies with the eights and twelve’s, but were given a few distinctive styling details. The grill was of egg crate design. Headlights were mounted on the radiator shell rather than the fenders, and the parking lights were on the fenders rather than in the headlight supports. Three spears were placed on the hood side panels and front fender skirts. There was no crease across the nose of the front fenders.

Chassis changes were the same as on the eights and twelve’s, with minor differences to accommodate the added weight, power, and tremendous 154 inch wheelbase.

1933 Cadillac

1933 CadillacDespite tough times, Cadillac fielded an extensively revamped lineup of V-8s, V-12s, and V-16s for 1933. Most notably, the boxy look of the Twenties began to give way to the streamlined look of the Thirties. Featured were fully skirted, flowing fenders and a graceful "windsplit" veed grille, which boasted a painted shell that blended in smoothly with the bodywork.

Eight Cylinder 355 - C

355-C Eight cylinder

  • In the mid twenties, Cadillac broke with functional body design and began a period of "stylish functional."
  • The 1933 "C" cars ushered in the period of styling/streamlining for its own sake.
  • A face lift, simple in execution but startling in effect, transformed the "B" cars and started the concept of selling cars on the basis of styling features and selling replacement cars on the basis of changes in style.
  • Bumpers were sectioned, with plain ends and a three-bar center.
  • The grill was made Vee-shaped and blended into the painted (chrome optional) radiator shell.
  • The radiator filler cap disappeared under the hood on the right side (same side as the oil level gauge).
  • The fender tie-bar, after a year's absence, was sectioned and the center section hidden behind the grill. 1933 Cadillac
  • Six horizontal doors replaced the vertical hood doors.
  • Skirts (valences) were added to front and rear fenders.
  • The most significant change in body detail was the introduction of no-draft Individually Controlled Ventilation (I.C.V.) or pivoting vent windows in the front doors and rear quarter or rear door windows.
  • In early production, the front door window had to be lowered to disengage the channel at its front edge from the vent window to allow the vent window to pivot.
  • In later production, the sealing channel was attached to the door frame rather than the window glass so that the vent window could be operated independently of the window glass.
  • Windshield and rear quarter windows were made stationary.
  • Absence of windshield operating mechanism on closed cars allowed room to conceal wiper motor behind the headboard.
  • The cowl ventilator was baffled and drained in such a way as to be rainproof.
  • Chassis changes were few and of minor nature.
  • Controlled free wheeling was discontinued.
  • Vacuum assist was added to the V-8 brake system.
  • Changes in shock absorber valves extended the range of the ride control system.
  • At engine unit number 30-3607; the dual point, four lobe distributor was replaced by a single point, eight lobe unit.

Twelve Cylinder 370 - C

1933 CadillacThe only way to tell the difference between the V-8 and V-12 Cadillac for 1933 is to check the emblems or look under the hood. (Lift the left side to check water level in the radiator - the filler cap and oil level gauge are on the left side on V-12 and V-16, on the right side on V-8's.)

Sixteen Cylinder 452 - C

In addition to a longer 149-inch wheelbase, the V-16s received a unique grille, a larger -- and more elegant "Goddess" hood ornament, and massive "four-bar" bumpers. Also, the three rectangular ventilator doors seen on the sides of the hood of the V-8s and V-12s yielded to three functional "spears" on the V-16, a theme repeated on the lower front fenders.

The magnificent V-16, first shown at the 1930 New York Auto Show, continued as before. Basically, the 45-degree, overhead-valve unit consisted of two inline eights sharing the same crankshaft, with each side of the engine having its own carburetion and exhaust system. With a 3.00 X 4.00-inch bore and stroke, it displaced 452 cubic inches. Horsepower was rated at 165, outdone only by Duesenberg's 265 bhp, although Packard's 160-bhp V-12 came close.

Ten Fleetwood body styles were listed. Prices ranged from $5540 for an Imperial cabriolet to $8000 for the All-Weather phaeton. These prices exceeded Packard's priciest V-12s, and had to be viewed as staggering in the depths of the Depression, when a Chevy started at $445.

For 1933, Cadillac announced that V-16 production would be limited to 400 cars. These were to be serially numbered -- the number and the owner's name to be displayed on a plate inside the car. Nearly seven body styles were suggested. Half this number of styles were actually built, but one half the total production of 126 cars was in the five most conservative five or seven passenger sedan styles.

V-16's had the Vee-shaped grille/radiator shell, skirted fenders, and no-draft ventilation common to the full line. Detail distinction was achieved with a new, winged goddess mascot; large, spinner hub caps; absence of crankhole cover in the grill; and an awkward, four-bar bumper. Hood side panels carried two vertical doors plus three stylized horizontal louvers. Vertical louvers on front fender skirts, shown in promotional literature and used on mockups, were replaced in "production" by three horizontal louvers matching the hood louvers.

Some new styling details were shown on various bodies. Instead of ending at the front of the cowl, some hoods were extended back over the cowl to the windshield. Many four door bodies sported a rear body panel which swept back over the fuel tank, with a door opening for carrying parcels. At least one open and one closed four door design offered a built-in trunk. A few styles even retained the "Madame X" look seen on some of the first V-16's.

Mechancal changes were few. A higher compression ratio was available to utilize improved gasolines. Except on early production, wheel size was reduced from 18" to 17". Beginning with engine unit number 50-24, the starter ring gear was moved from the clutch center-plate to the flywheel -- same as on the V-8 and V-12

1932 Cadillac

Eight Cylinder 355-B

Three primary models were available for 1932:

355-B

The Cadillac Series 355-B is representative of changes for 1932 that other models made.

1932 Cadillac

BODIES

  • The bodies were longer and lower with an entirely restyled front assembly.
  • The roof line was lowered one to three inches.
  • The longer hood had six ports.
  • The new front styling included a flat grill built into the radiator shell, headlight, streamlined bullet shaped side lights, and elimination of the fender tie-bar and monogram bar.
  • The trumpets of the dual horns projected through the headlight stanchions.
  • The headlight lenses were 9.5 inches each in diameter.
  • The dual taillights matched the headlights.
  • The Super-safe lighting featured three-filament bulbs and four control positions for degree and angle of illumination.
  • The front license plate was mounted on the bumper.
  • The running boards curved to match the sweep of the front fenders and blended into the rear fenders.
  • The tail of the rear fenders was blended into the fuel tank valance.
  • The trunk on the Town Coupe, Town Sedan, and five passenger Convertible Coupe was integral with the body.
  • The driver's vision was increased by 30%, as a result of elimination of the outside visor and construction of the 12 degree sloping windshield and corner posts.
  • A large ventilator was in the top of the cowl, but none in the sides of the cowl.
  • All separate body moldings were eliminated.
  • The three spoke steering wheel afforded easy view of instrument cluster in front of the driver.
  • The right side of the panel was occupied by a "locker."

1932 Cadillac

Chassis

  • Frame redesigned using more box construction and no front or rear tubular cross member.
  • Brake drums cast Molybdenum.
  • "Cardan" shaft replaced by cable control for front brakes.
  • "Full Range Ride control" by driver adjustment of shock absorber valves.
  • V-threaded spring shackle pins to conrol side play.
  • Wire wheels standard, with optional full chrome covers to simulate disc wheels.
  • Optional demountable wood wheels fit same hubs as wire wheels.

1932 Cadillac

Drive Line

  • "Triple-Silent Synchro-Mesh" transmission by use of a constant-mesh helical gears with ground and lapped tooth profile for all forward gears.
  • Rear axle redesigned to be lighter and stronger, through the use of improved heat treatment.
  • Final drive ratios changed, but smaller tires give same net effect.
  • "Controlled Free Wheeling" used -- vacuum assist on clutch, controlled by foot button. Depressing button releases clutch, releasing button or depressing accelerator re-engages clutch.

Engine

  • Twenty-one percent increase in power achieved mostly from new manifold design plus carburetor revisions.
  • Intake manifold redesigned to give equal length path to each cylinder.
  • Location of inlet and exhaust valves interchanged on middle cylinders of each block, placing inlet valves side by side at the center so that one leg of the inlet manifold can service both middle cylinders.
  • Exhaust manifold placed on top of the intake manifold, with single exhaust pipe to the rear.
  • Air filter added to intake muffler.
  • External tuning chamber on tail pipe.
  • Mechanical fuel pump replaces vacuum tank fuel feed.
  • Separate vacuum pump for wipers.
  • Oil filter mounted along left side of crankcase.
  • Increased capacity from battery and air cooled generator.
  • Manual advance on distributor eliminated.
  • Six point engine suspension (four corners of engine plus dual mount at rear of transmission).
  • Fan mounted closer to radiator.
  • Close fitting fan shroud adjustable and must be moved up or down on radiator as fan assembly is moved for adjustment of belt tension.
  • Radiator of full-bodied-fin construction.
  • Thermostat controlled shutters retained.

I. D. DATA

  • There were no serial numbers used for the Series 355-B Cadillac.
  • Engine numbers were stamped on the crankcase near the water inlet on the right hand side.
  • Starting 1200001.

Tweleve - Cylinder 370-B

Overall styling and appearance was identical to the V-8 except for the emblems.

Mechancial features were the same as the V-8 except for minor differences dictated by the increased power and weight (gear ratios, tire size, vacuum assist on brakes, battery/generator capacity). Dual exhaust system had tuning chambers in mufflers rather than attached to tail pipes. Dual ignition coils were mounted in top tank of radiator.

The engine was basically the same as the 370-A. Fuel feed changed from vacuum tank to mechanical pump. New Cuno disc type self-cleaning oil filter was mounted at right hand side of clutch housing, connected to starter pedal to rotate discs each time pedal was depressed. New Detroit Lubricator dual carburetors were first departure by Cadillac in twenty years from a Cadillac-Johnson carburetor.

Tweleve - Cylinder 452-B

Styling and appearance was the same as the V-8 and V-12 except for emblems and longer hood with seven ports. A few Fleetwood body styles had an 18 degree rather than the typical 12 degree windshield. Some body styles achieved the ultimate proportions -- radiator over front axle, windshield mid-way between the axles, and all seating between the axles.

With the longer wheelbase and more power and weight, some mechanical details were beefed up versions of the V-8, V-12 designs (10" deep frame, heavier axles, 18" rims, 11" clutch, 16" brake drums, different gear ratios, greater battery/generator capacity).1932 Cadillac

The engine remained basically the same as in 1930-31. As on the V-12, carburetors were changed to Detroit Lubricator, and oil filter was changed to Cuno. Fuel feed was by mechanical pump. Intake silencers with filter took place of the vacuum tanks on the dash. In a departure from the smooth, uncluttered look of the earlier V- 16, the spark plug wires sprouted from the top of the distributor cap. A more efficient and dependable design, but a real compromise in appearance.

1931 Cadillac

Three models were offered for 1931: a series 355-A with eight cylinders, a series 370-A with twelve cylinders, and a continuation of the 1930-31 series 452 and 452-A V-16.

1931 Cadillac

Series 355-A

The 355-A, eight cylinder was similar to the Series 353 of 1930 except the body was longer and lower. The hood was also longer with five hood ports or rectangular doors. The cowls had matching doors. the coach sill was modified and there were no compartments in the splash pan. The battery and tool compartments were located under the front seat. The floor boards were metal. The instrument panel was oval with the same grouping as the Series 353. It also featured a radiator screen, single bar bumper, and dual horns. The headlight diameter was reduced one inch.

1931 Cadillac

The frame was new with divergent side rails. The rear spirngs were mounted directly under the frame rails. There were metal covers on the springs. The radiator was mounted lower in the frame. The cooling system contained a condenser tank.

1931 Cadillac

The engine displacement was the same as the Series 353, but the series designation on the V-8 models no longer matched the displacement. The V-8 now had a five point engine suspension similar to the V-16. An intake muffler was added. The distributor was 1.5 inches higher than on the 345. The fan was mounted lower to match the lower mounted radiator.

1931 Cadillac

Serial numbers were not used. The engine numbers were stamped on the crankcase just below the water inlet on the right hand side. It started with 800001 and ended with 810717.

Series 370-A

The Cadillac Series 370-A (a twelve cylinder) was similar to the 1930-31 V-16. except some bodies were built by Fisher, but all body interiors were built by Fleetwood. The coach sill was modified with a single molding on the splash shield. The battery was mounted in the right front fender. The hood was four inches shorter than the V-16 and five inches longer than the V-8. The instrument panel was similar to the V-8 panel. The headlights were one inch smaller in diameter than the V-16 headlights. The dual rear lights were ball shaped like the V-8. The dual horns were slightly smaller than on the V-16.

1931 Cadillac

The frame had divergent side rails like the Series 355. The rear springs were mounted under the frame rails. The front tread was the same as the V-8. The brakes had a vacuum assist which was operated only from the left manifold. The brake drums were 15 inches. The sedans had two wheelbases: 140" and 143"; but the semi-commercial unit had a 152" wheelbase.

1931 Cadillac

The engine had dual intake silencers which were slightly smaller than the single unit on the V-8 and were positioned at the rear where the V-16 vacuum tanks were mounted. The carburetors were similar to the V-16, but they were reversed so that the air inlet was at the rear. A single vacuum tank was mounted on the center of the dash where the V-16 oil filter was mounted. The oil filter was mounted on the left side of the crankcase. The bore was 1/8 inch larger than the V-16. The rear center main (number 3) takes the thrust. The exhaust manifolds had two sections rather than three. The spark plug wires came out the top of the distributor cap rather than the rear.

1931 Cadillac

Serial numbers were not used on the 1931 Series 370-A. The engine numbers were stamped on the right hand side of the crankcase, on the generator drive chain housing. It started with 1000001 and ended with 1005733.

1930-1931 Cadillac 452

Series 452 & 452-A

The V16 (series 452 and 452-A) is one of the most desirable Caddies today for a number of reasons, but most of all because of the shape, style, and obvious quality.

1930 Cadillac 452
BODY

Although full-custom bodies were built by Fleetwood, Murphy, Waterhoulse, Saoutchik, VandenPlas, Pinin Farina, Pininfarina, and others; most were "catalog customs" by Fleetwood. A few cars had Fisher bodies. Only about one fifth were open or convertible. Two-thirds were five or seven passenger sedans or Imperials. The rest were Coupes or Town Cars.

More than 50 body styles were offered, but the list consists of only a few basic shells with several variations each: metal or leather quarters, with or without quarter windows, fixed or collapsible (Landau) quarters, with or without Imperial division, straight or coach sill, plain or recessed hood/cowl, etc.

With few exceptions, the "41" styles had plain hood and straight sill, the "42" styles had plain hood and coach sill, and the "43" styles had recessed hood/cowl and straight sill.

Windshield treatment varied from vertical Vee to 22 degree sloping as follows:

The sobriqet "Madame X" (with an "e") is not prominent, if it appears at all, in Cadillac promotional literature. Perhaps the only place Cadillac printed it is in body styling listings found in various parts lists, as early as March, 1930. The term is associatated with job/style numbers 4130, 4155, 4161, 4175, in plain, -S, -C, or -SC variations. In later parts lists, job number 4476 is listed as having a "Madame X" windshield.

"Madame X" has a Hollywood flavor, but is no more inappropriate than the style designations "Fleetbourne," "Fleetdowns," etc. the term must have arisen from a distinctive styling feature common to the four basic body styles. Further, the term more likely came from Detroit than from Pennsylvania Dutch country. The most distinctive styling feature of the "41" series bodies built in Detroit is the 18 degree flat, crank-up (V-V) windshield. It is unlikely that the Pennsylvania version with vertical Vee swing-out windshields were thought of as "Madame X" bodies. Job/style number 4276, being style 4476 with coach sill, also has a "Madame X" windshield.

Chrome plated window reveals were used on "41" bodies but were not unique to those styles. Although early body specs listed chrome plated reveals, July 1930 body specs listed painted reveals on "41" bodies. Painted window reveals on "Madame X" bodies are probably as rare as the "standard" rear-mounted spare tire.

In simplest terms, 1930-31 Fleetwood four door bodies with 18 degree windshield, mounted on Cadillac V-16 chassis are "Madame X"; and two Coupe body styles have the "Madame X" windshield.

Body details unique to the V-16 or introduced with the V-16 and seen on the full 1931 line include: Single bar bumpers, dual horns, concave monogram bar, radiator screen. 13 inch Guide "Tiltray" headlights, dual rear lights matching the headlights, triple molding on dust shield panels of straight sill styles, five doors in the hood, single matching door in the side of the cowl, and none, one, or two rectangular vent doors in the top of the cowl. Most bodies with recessed hood/cowl had one triangular door in the top of the cowl.
CHASSIS

DRIVE LINE
Rear engine support at tail of transmission. Heavier clutch linings (chassis unit 7-2991 and later used thinner lining of V-8). Rear axle shafts same as on 353 except made of special steel. Optional 3.47:1 final drive ratio dropped mid-model.
ENGINE
Extra effort and expense went into a polished, plated, enameled. uncluttered engine compartment. Wiring was concealed and covers were used on engine and dash to hide plumbing and controls.

Twin coils were mounted in recesses in the radiator top tank. Spark plug wires came out the rear of the double deck distributor cap and disappeared under the cover inside the Vee. The narrow (45 degree) Vee allowed for outboard mounting of manifolds and dual carburetors. Intake pipes from higher in the engine compartment were added at engine number 702502 to eliminate the problem of road splash entering the carburetors. Fuel feed was by dual vacuum tanks operated by vacuum pump. By May, 1930, the chrome plated vacuum tanks were superceded by painted units. The dual exhaust system ended in fan-shaped tail pipe tips.

To silence the overhead valve system, hydraulically rotated eccentric bushings were used in the rocker arms. The early use of a different head thickness for various compression ratios was replaced by the use of a single head with gaskets of different thickness. Right and left heads and blocks were interchangeable. One row of head studs went through the block to the crankcase, the second row sealed in the block.

Engine lubrication was full pressure from oil pump on rear main bearing cap. At engine unit number 7-1038, the oil level indicator was moved from rear of right hand cylinder block to left side of crankcase. The belt driven fan was mounted on ball bearings, lubricated by grease fitting, not engine oil pressure. Crankshaft thrust was taken by center main. A harmonic balancer was mounted on front end of crankshaft. A single chain to drive camshaft and generator was provided with automatic adjuster incorporated in an idler acting on the outside of the chain. A thermostat was used to close the crankcase ventilation intake at higher engine temperatures.

The double outlet water pump on the right side of the engine was driven by an extension shaft from the rear of the generator. A cooling system condenser tank was used once again.

The engine, transmission assembly was mounted at the four corners of the engine plus a dual mount at the rear of the transmission. The front mounts were supported by diagonal members in the frame.

HISTORICAL

  • Introduced January 1930
  • Model year sales: 3251
  • Model year production: 3251
  • The president and general manager was Lawrence P. Fisher
  • Although a token number (approximately one percent) of the V-16 chassis were sold to domestic and foreign coachbuilders, all body styles advertised by Cadillac were "Catalog Customs" by Fleetwood. The customer was able to order limited variations in the "Catalog Customs" or order a full-custom creation.
  • It is remarkable that Fleetwood was able to turn out four to five hundred bodies per month at a time when activities at the Pennsylvania shop were being phased out and "production" at a new location in Detroit was being set up.
  • Through the Fall of 1930, dealers were required to furnish the factory with weekly and monthly owner reaction and service reports on each V-16 delivered.

1930 Cadillac 353

The story of the 1930 Cadillac has to be divided into two sections: the 1930 series 353 eight cylinder model and the 1930-31 series 452 and 452-A V-16.

The Cadillac series 353 eight cylinder was an extension of the series 341-B of 1929 with a few changes. The Fisher body (called "Fisher Custom") was reduced to seven closed bodies including the Convertible Coupe. The Fleetwood body (called "Fleetwood Special Custom") consolidated its offerings into eleven basic bodies with many variations.
 1930 Cadillac
The louvers carried well into the front of the hood. The Fleetwood Roadster had louvers in the sides of the cowl. There was a wider radiator and larger headlights (12 inch lens and 13 inches overall). The windshield slopped a few degrees instead of being upright. The visor was a short cadet type. A valance was featured across the rear of the car which covered the fuel tank and frame and joined with the rear fenders. The rear tread was wider and the rear cushions were made 4 inches wider. Except for a few bodies, all were prewired for a radio with an aerial built into the top.

The chassis no longer had ball and socket spring shackles. The front tread increased from 56 inches to 59 inches. The rear tread increased from 58 inches to 59.5 inches. The third rear shoe for emergency was dropped. Instead, a lever operated the rear service brake shoes. The exhaust tail pipe end was fan shaped. Demountable wood wheels were offered as an extra cost option. All cars had a 3/4 floating rear axle.
1930 Cadillac
The bore of the engine was increased 1/16 inch. A reduction type starter was also used. The fan was lubricated by the engine oil return pressure. A cover was installed over the spark plugs. A new distributor had wires coming out the rear into a single conduit.

There were no serial numbers on the 1930 Cadillac Series 353. Engine numbers were stamped on the crankcase just below the water inlet on the right hand side. The starting number was 500001 and ended 511005.
