1909 Cadillac

Model "Thirty"

After an inauspicious trial in the luxury car field, and recognizing the disappearing market for the single cylinder cars which made their reputation, Cadillac settled down with a design which had originated in 1906 (the 1907-1908 Model G). With in-house mass production of a single line, Cadillac was able to offer a high quality automobile at a moderate price: $1400 for the Model "Thirty" as compared to $2000 for the Model G.

 1909 Cadillac Model Thirty

Cadillac offered three models: 2-door Touring 5-passenger; 2-door Demi-Tonneau 4-passenger; and Roadster 3-passenger. The "Thirty" differed from the Model G as follows:

Bodies

No closed bodies were offered. A detachable tonneau was once again available. It also had steel doors and cowl on the roadster and Demi-tonneau. Flared, twisted front fenders replaced the bulky flat fenders with filler between the fender and frame. Full running boards and running board dust shields were available on all bodies. There were no louvers in the hood. The bodies were finished (painted) by Cadillac
Chassis 3/4 platform rear spring system. Single dropped frame. Wheelbase lengthened to 106 in. In mid-year, brake drum diameter was increased to 12 in.
Drive line Transmission refined and mounted at three points to frame cross members rather than at the four points to frame side rails. Universal joint was housed in the ball joint at rear of the transmission. Rear axle with bevel gear differential made by American Ball Bearing
Engine Drive for water pump (gear type) and oiler changed from external belt to internal gears. Gear driven accessory shaft allows for optional magneto. Speed governor no longer used.

I. D. DATA
Serial numbers were located on a plate on the rear of the body or on the dash (with the engine no.). Engine numbers were stamped on top surface of crankcase -- in front of and to the left of the number one (front) cylinder. Starting: 32002. Ending 37904.

1908 Cadillac

Cadillac fielded five models: Model G, Model H, Model M, Model S, and Model T.

CADILLAC - MODEL G
  • The 1908 Model G was virtually the same as the 1907 Model G except a limousine was added to the line.
  • One or two passenger rumble seats were available, but of a different pattern than the single rumble seat model of 1907. 1908 Cadillac
  • There were no changes in the Model G engine for 1908, but the advertised horsepower rating was increased from 20 to 25.
  • This was due to the newly instituted ALAM horsepower formula, which gave the Model G a horsepower rating of 25.6.
  • Cadillac had always been conservative in horsepower ratings.
  • The ALAM rating was also conservative, and gave the same rating to every engine with the same bore and number of cylinders.
  • There was no allowance for design, accuracy or precision of manufacture, superior practice in fit and tolerance, etc.
  • Although having had a voice in establishing the ALAM formula, Cadillac soon took exception to being rated the same as the least sophisticated manufacturer.
  • Although engines were tested for actual developed horsepower, it was to be many years before horsepower curves were publicized.

The MODEL H for 1908 was the same as the 1907 Model H except the coupe body was dropped from the line. Also the touring body was now similar to the Model G with continuous molding across the center of the doors. The model H no longer supplied an engine speed governor or the interlock between brakes and clutch. Tire size increased to 34 x 4.1908 Cadillac Model S Runabout w/ rumble seat

The MODEL M was built only as a delivery vehicle. It was the same as the 1907 delivery except that prices now included two oil side lamps, an oil tail lamp, and a bulb horn. Headlamps were not included as standard equipment on Cadillacs until 1910. Also it did not have the longer wheelbase or running boards found on the Model S or Model T.

The MODEL S has the same chassis as the 1907 model except the wheelbase on all body styles increased to 82 in. and full running boards replaced the step plates. Single and double rumble seat options were available on the straight line or Victoria styles runabouts. If rumble seat passengers were to be carried regularly, it was recommended that tire size be increased from 30 x 3 to 30 x 3-1/2. 1908 Cadillac Model S

The MODEL T has the same chassis as the Model S except the coupe did not have running boards. The bodies were the same as the 1907 Model M except the folding tonneau was dropped. The Victoria style top was now available for the tonneau of the Victoria Touring.

HISTORICAL NOTES

The model G was introduced in November, 1907. Calendar year sales and production was 1030 (1907-1908). Model year sales and production: same. The President of Cadillac was C. A. Black.

Note: The bulky, complicated, planetary transmission luxury fours were too great a first leap from the single cylinder, which had become passe. The compromised Model G design formed a solid basis for the "Thirty," which was to be the single line for Cadillac through 1914. Had the Brush design concepts been perpetuated, the company might well have failed. Its move into a firm position in the luxury car field was to wait another seven years.

The model H was introduced in June, 1907. Calendar year sales and production: 509 (1906- 1908). Model year sales and production: same.

Note: This was the last year for the planetary transmission fours and the counterclockwise cranking for Cadillac. The only remaining Brush features were the copper water jacket and the splash lube system; both of these were in use by Cadillac through 1914.

The model M was introduced in 1906. Model year production was included with the 1907 figures.

The models S & T were introduced on Nov. 1907. Calendar year sales and production: 1482 with S & T. Model year sales and production: same.

Note: Several hundred of the approximately 16,000 single cylinder Cadillacs produced still exist in the hands of collectors all over the world. A prominent Australian collector visiting Hershey remarked, "Anyone wanting to restore, drive, and enjoy a one cylinder car had best find a Cadillac" -- no argument, mate.

1907 Cadillac

Cadillac offered four models for 1907: Model G, Model H, Model K, and Model M

Model G

  • Although the Model L Cadillac Limousine had a planetary transmission and 5" x 5" bore and stroke like the single cylinder Cadillac Runabout, the two models were entirely opposite in concept.
  • The single cylinder was a horseless carriage for the masses, the Model L a Nabob's throne-on-wheels.
  • Whether due to the Alanson Brush patent squabble, acute marketing perception, or both; Cadillac came up with a four cylinder design which met the expectations of customers who wanted just a bit more than the best one cylinder car could offer — an inexpensive, easily maintained, long lasting, precision built car — a "single cylinder Cadillac with four cylinders" — the Model G.
  • Serial numbers on plate on rear of body or on dash (with engine number).

Engine numbers were stamped on top surface of crankcase — in front of   and to the left of number one (front) cylinder.Model G engine numbers: 30003-30425 (1907), 30426-30500 (1907-1908).

Cadillac fielded four models for 1906: Two single cylinder models: K and M; and two four cylinder models: L and H. The Model K sold for $750. Calendar year sales and production were 3650 units. The model year sales were the same number. The serial number was on a plate on the rear of body (with engine number). Engine numbers were stamped in two places on the crankcase: 1. Top, right edge of cylinder flange, near the water outlet. 2. Top surface of left, front mounting leg. It was also placed on a plate on the rear of the body (with serial number). (Blank spaces on patent plate are for additional patent dates, not engine or serial number.) Engine No.: 8350-10000.

1906 CadillacThe Model K was introduced on January, 1906. The chassis was the same as the 1905 models, except the spark control was now on the steering column and the oiler had a mechanical feed from a cam on the hub of the flywheel. Straight-side Dunlop tires were now standard equipment. The bodies were restyled. All 1906 one cylinder passenger car bodies were now the Victoria style. The dash was now pressed steel and the corners of the "hood" was rounded. This "hood" and dash treatment was used through 1908. 1906 cars can be identified by a long muffler and severe cant to the nose of the front fenders. The tops were not shown in catalogs but undoubtedly were available. Cadillac was setting up its own top department and would be offering Cadillac-made tops for 1907

Chassis: Change in commutator drive allowed for shorter hood; dash now pressed steel; wheelbase lengthened to 110 in.; service and emergency brakes both act on rear drums. Except for the V-16's, the Model L engine displacement was not equalled in a production Cadillac engine until 1964. Wm. K. Vanderbilt, Jr. owned a Model L Cadillac, but this type of customer was rare. Cadillac needed high production to make the concept of interchangeable parts pay off.

The Model H was introduced January, 1906

Notes: Same as Model L except no limousine offered. The Touring was a five-passenger. The Runabout and first production Cadillac Coupe offered. The wheelbase was 102 in., tires 32 x 4; rear springs 3/4 elliptic. Early ads, advance catalogs, and the 1906 ALAM Handbook listed the wheelbase of the Model H as 100 in. rather than the actual 102 in.
The president of Cadillac was C.A. Black. The purge of Alanson Brush design features was started. The mixe and variable inlet valve opening were no longer used on four-cylinder Cadillacs. The real start of the purge was the design of the Model G for 1907.

 1905 Cadillac

In this third year of production, Cadillac fielded five distinct models: Model B, C, D, E, and F. Some people become confused by thinking that Model E, F, K, M, S, and T are distinct models. They are just one model with different body styles. The E, K, and S are runabouts; the F, M, and T are all other body styles.

The Model B was introduced in 1904. The single cylinder Model B remained unchanged from the 1904 Cadillac. The horsepower was now rated at 9 instead of 8.5. In 1904, the optional 60 inch (1.525 meters) (wide track was not available on the Model B; but this year a 61 inch (1.55 meters) tread was also made optional by the use of tubular axle to replace the pressed steel axle with standard tread.

Introduced Summer, 1905. The Model C was a mid-year offering, at a reduced price. It was a single cylinder Model B with a Model F "hood" and radiator. Cadillac called the Model C "an accommodation to customers who want a detachable tonneau." The tonneau of the Model F was non-detachable. The introduction of the Model C may be interpreted as "a program to move out the remaining Model B chassis."

 Historical Data

Introduced Jan., 1905. Innovations: Three speed planetary transmission. Governed throttle. Variable lift inlet valve gear on multi-cylinder engine. Notes: The four-cylinder Model D had a five passenger touring body with side entrance tonneau doors and a wood body. Aluminum skins were available at extra cost. It also featured running boards and an aluminum dash. It also had a carrying lubricator and running fuel tank with gravity feed to the mixer. The storage fuel tank was located at rear of chassis. Fuel transfer was made to the running tank by exhaust pressure.1905 Cadillac Osceola

The chassis emphasized strength and durability with a pressed steel frame. It had two half-elliptic springs in front and a platform spring in the rear. It featured right hand steering with controls to right. The brake lever operated the service brakes on the rear drums. A foot pedal operated the emergency brake on drive shaft. The application of either brake system disengaged the flywheel clutch through an interlock. The engine and transmission were mounted in a tubular subframe. It also had a patented double syphon muffling system.

The driveline had a three-speed planetary transmission (3:1, 2:1, 1:1). All speeds were activated progressively with a single lever. There were twin clutch discs in the flywheel; a disc clutch and three bands on the transmission; and an emergency brake drum behind transmission. Instead of being chain driven, it had a shaft drive with two U-joints linked to a bevel gear. The live rear axle had a spur gear differential. 1905 Cadillac Roadster

The four cylinder vertical in-line L-head engine had counterclockwise cranking. Individual cylinders had copper water jackets and the heads were detachable with factory equipment. The lower section of the two-piece crankcase held the carrying mains and a patented sloping-trough splash lube system which insures lubrication to each cylinder regardless of grade. The horizontal commutator shaft projected forward into cavity in radiator. The commutator was serviced from the front of vehicle. The number one cylinder was over the front axle with a stretched out accessory section on the front of the engine. The radiator extended forward of the front tires. The hood is one quarter the length of the car.
Engine throttle control was a complicated variation of the one cylinder throttling arrangement. The L-head valves were operated by in line push rods and roller tappets riding on extra wide cams on a spring loaded, sliding camshaft. Exhaust cams were of constant cross section but inlet cams were cone shaped to produce varying lift and timing as the camshaft moved along its axis. The axial motion of the camshaft against its return spring was by a hydraulic piston which received pressure from an engine driven pump. The throttle control on the steering column operated a bypass valve in the hydraulic loop. The position of this valve regulated the percentage of system pressure acting on the camshaft piston, thus the nominal axial position of the camshaft.1905 Cadillac Model F The governor action was automatic due to interaction between the engine driven pump speed, hydraulic pressure, and cam position (overspeed increased the pressure and drove the cam back to a lower speed position). As on the one cylinder engines, the inlet valve opening automatically determined the amount of fuel supplied by the mixer. The mixer was identical to the one cylinder mixer except for the addition of an auxiliary air intake valve.

In addition to patents pertaining to one cylinder cars, Alanson Brush also held patents on the splash lubrication system and the muffler system used on Model D. Although not patented, counterclockwise cranking was a Brush "trademark."

The Model F cost $950. Calendar year sales and production (combined with the B, C, and E models) was 4029. The model year sales were the same number.
HISTORICAL NOTES
Introduced January, 1905. The new front end styling was recognized as a desirable improvement. Not only did Cadillac update Model B's with the Model F "hood" and radiator (Model C), but owners of A's and B's had the new nose grafted to their cars. There was even an aftermarket supplier of update kits. The Model F had the same chassis as Model E except for a two inch longer wheelbase. One body style was the first Cadillac one cylinder touring car with non-detachable tonneau and two side doors for tonneau entrance. Another body style was a delivery vehicle.

The president of Cadillac was C. A. Black. After designing the one cylinder and Model D Cadillacs, Alanson Brush left Leland & Faulconer/Cadillac and extracted a lump sum and royalty payments for use of his patents. This action triggered a plan to purge Cadillac design of Brush influence. Cadillac Automobile Co. and Leland & Faulconer merged in Oct., 1905 to form Cadillac Motor Car Co., Henry Leland became General Manger of the new company. Maximum production capability one car every ten minutes of each ten hour working day.
Serial numbers were not used on any of these models. Engine numbers were stamped two places on crankcase. 1.     Top, right edge of cylinder flange, near water outlet. 2.     Right, front face, just below top cover.

(Blank spaces on patent plate are for additional patent dates, not engine number.)

There are no translations available.

1904 Cadillac

In 1904, Cadillac offered two models. The Model A was a continuation of the 1903. It had a delivery body with detachable top. Horsepower increased to 8.25. Clincher tires became standard equipment. An optional 60 inch tread was available. A pressure fed multiple oiler was introduced.

1904 Cadillac Runabout w/ TonneauThe Model B was the same as the Model A except the chassis had a pressed steel frame and axles. It featured front axle girder style (which was not available in the wide tread option) and single transverse half-elliptic front spring. Cranking (counterclockwise) was only on the left side; but a decompression device was provided to facilitate cranking. A safety device was introduced to prevent the crank from being inserted when the spark control lever was in the advanced position. Horsepower rating increased to 8.25; but this was more an issue of confidence in the engine rather than any engine design changes.

The body of the Model B was an inverted box rather than the sloping, curved dash. The radiator was vertical and below frame instead of the front mounted sloping unit on the Model A. A joint in body at dash allowed the body to be slid off without lifting. A surrey body style was added with a side entrance detachable tonneau. The delivery top was no longer detachable. The weight of all body styles was reduced by as much as 70 pounds. Prices increased $50. When the street was muddy, cars with rear entrance tonneau were backed in perpendicular to the sidewalk so passengers did not have to walk in the mud. The side entrance surrey ended this inconvenience.1904 Cadillac Model B

Once again serial numbers were not used for Model A or B. The engine numbers were stamped two places on crankcase: top, right edge of cylinder flange, near the water outlet; and right, front face, just below top cover. The blank spaces on patent plate was for additional patent dates, not engine number. Model A engine numbers ranged from 3500 to 4018. Model B numbers were 2500 to 3500.

The transmission had two forward speeds (3:1 and 1:1) and one reverse with a disc clutch and chain drive. The overall ratio was 3.1:1 to 5:1 depending on the combination of the size of the sprockets. The drive sprocket had 9 or 10 teeth and the driven sprocket had 31, 34, 38, 41, or 45 teeth. The lower ratios were used on the runabouts used on smooth, level roads; but the higher ratios were used on hilly roads and for delivery vehicles. Owners were instructed how to change the sprockets, but it involved the disassembly of the transmission and rear axle — hardly a job for the average motorist.
