1967 Cadillac DeVille

DEVILLE SERIES 683

Minor trim variations and slightly richer interiors separated DeVille’s from Calais. For example, Tiffany style chrome signature scripts were again found above the body side molding on the rear fenders. DeVille equipment lists were comprised of all the same features found on Calais models plus power operated window regulators; rear cigarette lighters in all styles and two-way power front seats. An innovative slide-out fuse box and safety front seat back lock for two-door models were additional Cadillac advances for the 1967 model year.

1967 Cadillac Calais

CALAIS SERIES 682

1967 CadillacNew at Cadillac for 1967 was a redesigned side panel contour that created a longer look and more sculptured appearance. The coupe roof structure was restyled after the Florentine show car and gave added privacy to rear seat passengers. Technical improvements included a revised engine valve train, different carburetor Mylar printed circuit instrument panel, re-tuned body mounts and a new engine fan with clutch for quieter operation. A squarer cornered radiator grille insert had a cross-hatch pattern that appeared both above the bumper and through a horizontal slot cut into it. Rear end styling revisions were highlighted by metal divided taillamps and a painted lower bumper section. The new front grille had a forward angle and blades that seemed to emphasize its vertical members. Rectangular parking lamps were housed at the outer ends.

Listed as standard equipment for cars in this line were:
  • automatic transmission
  • power brakes
  • power steering
  • heater and defroster
  • reflectors
  • full wheel discs
  • three-speed windshield wipers and washers
  • lefthand remote control outside rear view mirror

1967 Cadillac Overview

1967 CadillacThe most significant Cadillac of the decade arrived for 1967: an all-new Eldorado with front-wheel drive. Based on the previous year's new Oldsmobile Toronado, it was a daring concept for the luxury field, with six years of careful planning and research behind it. Front drive gave it outstanding roadability; Bill Mitchell gave it magnificent styling.

1967 CadillacIt had originated in 1959 with the XP-727 program, which underwent several design alterations through early 1962. Management then settled on front-wheel drive, and further prototypes evolved with that in mind. For awhile, Cadillac considered calling it LaSalle, but ultimately chose Eldorado as a more current name with greater public recognition. Clay model XP-825, with razor-edge lines and a formal roofline, led directly to the production '67 coupe.

Unlike Toronado, this new Eldorado was announced in very low-key fashion. That was typical of Cadillac, as was using a one-year delay to improve on a sister division's work. The Eldo thus rode better than the Toronado, yet handled at least as well despite the same basic suspension: torsion bars, A-arms, and telescopic shocks in front; a beam axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs with four shock absorbers (two horizontal, two vertical) at the rear. Self-leveling control and radially vented front disc brakes were also featured.

On its own relatively compact 120-inch wheelbase, the front-drive Eldorado was announced at $6277 and targeted for 10 percent of Cadillac's total 1967 model-year production -- about 20,000 units. The final figure was 17,930. For 1968-70, sales ran 23,000-28,000. A technological tour de force, it quickly established itself as the ultimate Cadillac. And unlike the old Fifties Brougham, it made money from day one.

Cadillac's 1967 "standards" were treated to an extensive restyle, with forward-angled headlamps and a prominent hump over the rear wheels. Line-wide features included printed mylar instrument-panel circuits, automatic level control (standard on Fleetwoods), cruise control, and tilt steering wheel. Bolstered by the new Eldorado, also part of the Fleetwood series, Cadillac built precisely 200,000 cars for the model year.

FLEETWOOD SIXTY-SPECIAL SUB-SERIES 680/681
Models in this range were characterized by traditional standard equipment additions and by emblems containing a Cadillac shield encircled by a laurel wreath, which appeared on the hood and center of the deck. Fleetwood designations, in block letters, were also found at the right-hand side of the deck. The Brougham had the wreath-style medallions on the roof pillar, along with Tiffany scripts in the same location to identify this extra-rich model.

FLEETWOOD SEVENTY-FIVE SERIES 697/698
Fleetwood exterior trim and Fleetwood interior appointments enriched the cars in Cadillac's high-dollar lineup. The first major restyling, since 1959, was seen on these models, as well as perimeter type frames. The new look brought the appearance of the big sedan and the limousine up to date, so that it matched the visual impression of other Cadillac lines. A big jump in sales for both regular production models, but not the commercial chassis, was the result.

1966 Cadillac Eldorado

Little change was evident for 1966, the final season for the rear-drive Eldorado. This was a record sales year for Cadillac, its fifth in a row, and 1966 Eldorado production was exceeded only by the 1955 total. And that's as it should be, for a car with such a great heritage should end on a note of triumph.

1966 Cadillac Eldorado

But by now, Cadillac had decided it was again time for something truly new. It appeared the following year in the form of the first front-wheel-drive Eldorado, which would set a new standard for personal-luxury transportation. This car would only strengthen Cadillac's dominance in the upper end of the market. In first-year sales alone it exceeded its predecessor's combined total for the previous 10.

Nevertheless, this success wouldn't have been possible had it not been for the memorable Eldorado’s of the Fifties and early Sixties. With the best of everything Cadillac had to offer in those years, they left an indelible impression in the minds and hearts of owners and would-be owners everywhere, and you can't ask much more than that.

FLEETWOOD ELDORADO SUB-SERIES 684

Fleetwood type trim was seen again on the Eldorado. Equipment additions included white sidewall tires and a six-way power front bench seat. It was to be the last season that conventional engineering characterized this model.

1966 Cadillac DeVille

DEVILLE SERIES 683

Following the general styling theme found on Calais models, the DeVille series was again distinguished with Tiffany-like scripts above the rear tip of the horizontal body rub moldings. Standard equipment additions followed the pattern of previous years. Cadillac crests and V-shaped moldings, front and rear, were identifiers.
