1966 Cadillac Calais

CALAIS SERIES 682

1966 CadillacFor 1966 Cadillac offered 12 models in three series, Calais, DeVille, and Fleetwood. Cadillac "firsts" seen this season included variable ratio steering and optional front seats with carbon cloth heating pads built into cushions and seatbacks. Comfort and convenience innovations were head rests, reclining seats and an AM/FM stereo system. Engineering improvements made to the perimeter frame increased ride and ease of handling. Newly designed piston and oil rings were adopted and new engine and body mountings were employed. All models, except the 75 Series limousines, were mildly face lift. Changes included a somewhat coarser mesh for the radiator grille insert, which was now divided by a thick, bright metal horizontal center bar housing rectangular parking lamps at its outer ends. A Cadillac crest and V-shaped molding trimmed the hood of Calais. Separate, rectangular side marker lamps replaced the integral grille extension designs. There was generally less chrome on all Cadillac models this year.

1966 Cadillac Overview

1966 CadillacCadillac enjoyed its first 200,000-car year for calendar '66, breaking the barrier by precisely 5001 units. A mild facelift brought a new front bumper and grille, plus more integrated taillight housings. The 75 switched to the new perimeter frame and was fully restyled for the first time since 1959. Variable-ratio power steering was a new option, as were carbon-cloth seat heating pads. The Fleetwood Brougham became a separate model, still more luxuriously trimmed than the plain-roof Sixty Special and priced about $320 higher.

I. D. NUMBERS

  • Vehicle numbers were found on the left center pillar post.
  • The original engine serial number was the same as the vehicle identification number.
  • The numbering system was the same employed a year earlier with the second symbol changed to a "6" for 1966 model year.
  • All Eldorado’s now utilized the first two symbols "68" for their Style Number.
  • The Sixty-Special Brougham was now a separate model of the Fleetwood Series with a "P" Style Number suffix applied.

HISTORICAL
  • Best ever sales and production year in Cadillac history.
  • Second year running for sales increases, despite a downturn in the overall market for U.S. cars.
  • First season for delivery of more than 200,000 new units.
  • A record of 5,570 one-week builds was marked December 5 and a record one-day output of 1,017 cars was achieved October 27.
  • The 1966 models were introduced October 14, 1965.
  • Towards the end of the summer 1966, a new assembly line was setup to manufacture front-wheel-drive Eldorado’s conforming to 1967 model specifications.

1965 Cadillac Fleetwood

FLEETWOOD SIXTY-SPECIAL SUB-SERIES

Poised on a new 133 inch wheelbase, the Sixty-Special sedan wore Fleetwood crests on the hood and deck. All features found in lower priced Cadillacs were standard, as well as power ventipanes, glare-proof rear view mirror and automatic level control. Like Calais and DeVilles, the Fleetwood Sixty-Special had an improved Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission with a variable stator. A new Fleetwood Brougham trim option package was introduced at a price of $199. Its main feature was a more richly appointed interior.

FLEETWOOD 75 SUB-SERIES

Cadillac's longest, heaviest, richest and highest priced models were, again, more conventionally engineered than the other lines. For example, the new perimeter frame was not in use and neither was the improved automatic transmission. In addition, automatic level control was not featured. Even the annual styling facelift did not affect these traditional-bound luxury cars. They came with all power controls found in Eldorados and added courtesy and map lights to the standard equipment list. Sales of commercial chassis earned an increase of thirty units, while limousine deliveries tapered slightly downward and the popularity of the nine-passenger sedan saw a considerable decline.

  1965 Cadillac Eldorado

1965 Cadillac EldoradoExcept for the Series 75, the entire Cadillac line was again totally redesigned for 1965. Appearance was smoother and more rounded, thanks in part to the division's first use of curved side glass, and the tailfins -- a Cadillac tradition since 1948 -- were gone. The big V-8 was repositioned six inches forward of its previous location in a new box-section perimeter frame, replacing the old X-type. A completely new four-link rear suspension system combined with front suspension refinements for an even smoother ride, and a revised exhaust setup brought an already quiet automobile even closer to silence. It had been a long time since Cadillac had made so many significant advances in a single model year. Naturally, the Fleetwood Eldorado convertible shared in these. Like the Sixty-Special, it was again bereft of bodyside trim apart from the wide rocker moldings, but the fender skirts were back once more as standard. Predictably, Eldorado sales, like those of the entire Cadillac line, increased markedly.

Under a new model rearrangement, the Eldorado became a one-car Fleetwood sub-series, but was really less distinguished than before. Additional standard equipment, over that found in Sixty-Specials, included white sidewall tires and a six-way power seat for cars with regular bench seating.

DeVilles kept their rear fender signature scripts for distinctions of trim. One auto writer described this feature as "Tiffany-like." Standard equipment matched that found in Calais models plus power window lifts.

 NOTES:
  • Style Number 68357-J was called the Coupe DeVille.
  • Other models were Convertible or Sedan DeVilles.
  • Some sources quote substantially lower factory list prices for 1965 Cadillacs.
  • This may be due to a strike that occurred very early in the year, which probably brought $100-400 price increases after it was settled.
  • The UAW walkout closed the company's newly expanded Clark Avenue (Detroit) factory from September 25, 1964 through the following December and created a decline in production and sales for the 1964 calendar year.
  • The higher retail prices are being used in these pages

1965 Cadillac Calais

CALAIS

The Calais Series replaced the Sixty-Two line for 1965, as one of numerous Cadillac changes. A broader, more unified grille and vertically mounted headlamps featured the styling improvements. The Cadillac tailfin was said to be gone, but symmetrical rear fender forms tapered to very thin edges, top and bottom, giving a very traditional visual impression. Curved side windows with frameless glass were new and convertibles had tempered glass backlights (i.e., rear windows). Last seen in 1956, the standard wheelbase pillared sedan made a return this year. Perimeter frame construction allowed repositioning of engines six inches forward in the frame, thus lowering transmission humps and increasing interior room. Standard Calais equipment was comprised of the following:

  • power brakes
  • power steering
  • automatic transmission
  • dual backup lights
  • windshield washers and dual speed wipers
  • full wheel discs
  • remote controlled outside rear view mirror
  • visor vanity mirror
  • oil filter
  • five tubeless black tires
  • heater
  • defroster
  • lamps for luggage, glove and rear passenger compartments
  • cornering lights
  • front and rear seat safety belts.
