1963 Cadillac Fleetwood

SERIES SIXTY-SPECIAL FLEETWOOD

The Sixty-Special Fleetwood sedan was, again, distinguished by chevron slashes of bright metal on the sides of the roof "C" pillars. Also seen were full-length bright metal underscores, clean side styling, a rear end quadrant pattern grille and Cadillac crest medallions towards the back of the rear fenders. Standard equipment included all normal 6300 sub-series features, plus power ventipanes.

SERIES 5700 - FLEETWOOD 75

Cadillac's extra-long nine-passenger cars were the only pillared four-door sedans in the line. Standard equipment was the same as on base 6300 models and Series 62 convertibles. Trimmings included a full-length lower beltline molding of a simple, but elegant design. Convertible top-look rooflines and windshields with forward "dog leg" style pillars were 1962 carry-overs seen exclusively on this line.

1963 Cadillac Eldorado

A more distinguished-looking Biarritz arrived for 1963. The lower body "skeg" lines of 1961-62 were erased on all Cadillac’s, and wide brushed-finish rocker panel moldings gave the Biarritz closer kinship with the svelte Sixty Special. The price remained stable -- a nominal two dollars less than the year before -- and production, though still limited, increased significantly.

1963 Cadillac DeVille

SERIES 62 - DEVILLE 6300 SUB-SERIES

This line reflected Series 62 styling revisions, but incorporated a DeVille signature script above the lower beltline molding, near the rear of the body. Standard features on DeVilles (and on base 6200 convertibles) were the same as on closed body 6200 models, plus two-way power seats and power windows. Model 6367E, the Eldorado Biarritz convertible, had special styling with untrimmed body sides, full-length stainless steel underscores and a rectangular grid pattern rear decorative grille. • However, the short-deck 6300 model, called the Sedan DeVille Park Avenue, was retained and used the same "D" body identification symbol.
  • Rooflines on two-door hardtops were restyled, which brought a change in body style coding, but not in the alphabetical suffix.

1963 Cadillac 6200

SERIES 62

In overall terms, 1963 Cadillac’s were essentially the same as the previous models. Exterior changes imparted a bolder and longer look. Hoods and deck lids were redesigned. The front fenders projected 4-5/8 inches further forward than in 1962, while the tailfins were trimmed down somewhat to provide a lower profile. Body side sculpturing was entirely eliminated. The slightly V-shaped radiator grille was taller and now incorporated outer extensions that swept below the flush-to-fender dual headlamps. Smaller, circular front parking lights were mounted in these extensions. A total of 143 options - including bucket seats; wool, leather or nylon upholstery fabrics and wood veneer facings on dash, doors and seat backs - set an all-time record for interior appointment choices. Standard equipment for cars in the 62 Series (6200 models) included power brakes; power steering; automatic transmission: dual backup lamps; windshield washers; dual speed wipers; wheel discs; remote control outside rear view mirrors; lefthand vanity mirror; oil filter; five tubeless black tires; heater; defroster and cornering lights. Convertibles were equipped with additional features, also used on all 6300 models.

1963 Cadillac Overview

1963 Cadillac ConvertibleCadillac's long-running V-8 got its first major revision in 14 years for 1963. Bore and stroke were unchanged, as were valves, rocker arms, cylinder heads, compression (still 10.5:1), and connecting rods. But nearly everything else was different: lighter, stronger crankshaft; a stiffer block weighing 50 pounds less than the previous one; ancillaries relocated to improve service access. While all this did little for performance, the revised 390 was much smoother and quieter. Then again, performance was already good. The typical '63 could reach 115-120 mph, do 0-60 mph in 10 seconds, and return about 14 miles per gallon. Most impressive was the near-silence at high speed. In this, many testers held Cadillac superior to Rolls-Royce. Styling departed from recent practice. Fins were lower than ever, the grille was bulkier, new outer body panels and side moldings created a more slab-sided effect, and the rear was more massive, with elongated vertical tail/backup-light housings.

1963 Cadillac Fin

Prices rose only slightly for '63, so Cadillac remained an excellent value for the money. Standard equipment ran to Hydra-Matic, power steering, self-adjusting power brakes, heater, backup lights, and left remote-control door mirror. A six-way power seat became standard on Eldorado, and power windows were included on all except Series 62 sedans and coupes. Even power vent windows were offered, as were vinyl roof coverings, a new option. Remarkably, a Series 62 still cost as little as $5026; the Eldo Biarritz was only $6608. Production topped 163,000.

1962 Cadillac Fleetwood

SERIES SIXTY-SPECIAL FLEETWOOD

The Sixty-Special Fleetwood sedan stood apart in a crowd. It had chevron slash moldings on the rear roof pillar and a distinctly cross-hatched rear deck latch panel grille. Standard equipment comprised all features found on closed cars in the 6300 DeVille sub-series.
